More on trip to Playa del Carmen
Dec 14, 2005[Playa Maya](http://www.playa-maya.com/) is located at the North end
of
Calle 8 off “5th Avenue” with its entrance through the beach. I was
disarmed that the photos I saw on the website were truthful
representations of the actual place. The hotel is lovely, small,
updated
and quiet. The staff were without exception warm and friendly.
We have an infant, so we were grateful that our room was one of the two
studios. It was neat, clean, air-conditioned, had its own kitchenette,
easier access with the stroller and, a kindness to the other guests,
who
don’t want to hear a baby at night, away from the other rooms. They
accommodated the baby with a portable crib/playpen which he took to and
slept in better than his crib at home. It was right beside the pool and
jacuzzi, so lacked a beach view, but dipping in the jacuzzi and
lounging
in the shady mezzanine beside the pool ten feet from our door suited us
and the baby.
We ate breakfast and lunch each day at the tables under the thatched
canopy leading from the bar to the white sand beach. The food was very
good. The continental breakfast was light fare of breads, danish,
fruit,
juice and, surprising, a hot food like pancakes and french toast. I
opted for huevos rancheros and Maria for yogurt with granola. I
can
strongly recommend both the ceviche and the shrimp tacos for lunch. The
kitchen
closes before the bar and the bar shuts down around 10pm. That is not a
problem given the number of establishments on the strip and it is in
keeping with the calm atmosphere of the hotel.
We don’t generally go to “resort” towns, preferring locations where
tourism is a secondary industry, at least not in season. Frankly, I
don’t see myself going to Cancun and the Playa del Carmen again, but we
did get into a relaxed pace.
