June 2004

Everything is nearly back to normal server-wise and I’m hosting my own site again. Much in the way of thanks to Bill Bradford for allowing me to keep things on his server while I moved and put things back together.

A friend sent me an invitation to google’s gmail. Sort of like orkut, the buzz in the usual forums and other sources makes me think nearly everyone who wants one has one by now and I’m just catching up. I don’t use web-based mail so I’m not sure what I’ll do with it, let alone with a gigabyte of storage, but I registered just in case I need a throw away account. The mail id is ‘rlonstein’ at the obvious address.

Rode the motorcycle down from upstate late this afternoon. The eighty-four miles were easy and traffic was light but my ezpass gave me trouble. At the Henry Hudson it did not register and an officer had to wave it over the sensor on the island and at the Battery Tunnel, at the advice of the attendant, I had to roll the bike backward and forward over the pressure plate twice before the gate tripped. I suspect the bike isn’t heavy enough to trip the sensor.

I need to rig a better mount for it, too. Fumbling with it while paddling on the slick pavement in the gate to keep the bike upright and working clutch and throttle is a recipe for a mishap. The tag vibrates loose from the hook and loop fasteners on my windshield, probably too much curvature and flexing, making for a fun high-speed grab when it drops and rattles around the top of the instrument panel, and it’s a hit or a miss if it works when it’s tucked into an arm or chest pocket on my riding suit.

I’m going to make a stop at Prospect Cycle. They don’t carry my marquee but seem to be a well-stocked shop for accessories and such. I’ll have to also check out the local Honda dealer, Brooklyn Cycles.

Yeah, it’s a cheap shot at Windows but one of my coworkers entertained us today with this snapshot taken with his Sony Clie while on his way into work.

My self-installation kit arrived from Speakeasy. I signed up for RADSL, rate-adaptive dsl, and the potential of 6Mbit downstream. It’s true. It’s astonishingly fast. I ran a couple of informal and formal speed tests just to make sure that I wasn’t imagining it. All I can say is,”Wow.” For $10/month less than I was paying for my 1.5M/384k I have 3.98M/619k.

Remember kids, speed kills (but it’s worth it)[1]

[1] - I remember this quip attributed to Eric Burdon of the Animals but I can’t find easy reference to it.
